Belated Brief Introduction

I'm starting this blog for a few reasons.
  1. Becoming a parent is interesting and terrifying
  2. I have a terrible memory
  3. Let's just say my writing skills are in need of improvement
These are all sort of related. I want to be a decent parent, and it seems like the main difficulty is communication. There are probably thousands of articles out there on the web that promote the values of writing to improve communication skills, so I figure it is worth the effort. If nothing else, I may end up with some content that is at least interesting to me.

Hospital Already?

Today was quite a bit more exciting than I had expected it to be. Sarah and I got to spend an hour or so in the triage room at the hospital. Since this is the first post on this blog, a tiny bit of context is helpful. We are expecting our first child.

Wait, that makes the hospital visit less surprising, so obviously that's not quite enough context.

The kid isn't supposed to be here for a month, and all of Sarah's checkups have been pretty much textbook. I suppose nature decided that we've had enough routine and kicked things up a few notches. So, she's having mild contractions every 5-10 minutes. A call to the doctor told us to go in and get her checked out. I watched the contraction monitor for an hour, which was pretty cool, but the nurse really didn't have much to tell us. "Yep, she's having contractions. Go home."

So, the waiting game just became kind of interesting.

My experience with childbirth equals exactly zero, so it will be fun seeing all of my preconceived ideas completely fall on their faces.
